Bursztyn Family Award
The Bursztyn Family Award is awarded to a third- or fourth-year student studying in the Honours Bachelor of Science – Nursing program at the Barrie Campus. Recipients will demonstrate academic achievement (minimum 75 % GPA) and financial need and illustrate, through a written submission, how they are committed to systems thinking and ‘thinking like a nurse’. Recipients will exemplify a passion for enquiry in both clinical and theory-based settings and an enthusiasm for exploring intricate physiological processes that underpin patient care. The faculty in the nursing area will select the recipient.

Peter Bursztyn’s Background
McGill University
My first academic post was teaching physiology at a new medical school in Kenya (1968-1972), then at Glasgow University, (1 year) and University of Southampton, U.K. (15 years), and Zimbabwe (on sabbatical from Britain). I have taught medical, science and pharmacy students, but never nursing students.

I am fortunate never to have needed a prolonged stay in a hospital and my demands on the health care system have been modest. However, I recognize that while doctors receive most of the accolades, without nurses, their work would become harder, less effective and perhaps impossible.

This (modest) award is a tangible expression of my appreciation.

Impact

Message to Students
Never think you are not appreciated.
Patients understand how important nurses are better than almost anyone.
Doctors may not show it, but most of them respect and appreciate how much nurses contribute to patient comfort and recovery.
